My name is Sgt. Jason S. Wittling USMC. I was in Charlie Company, First Combat Engineer Battalion, First Marine Division. I spent 10 years, 1 month and 28 days in the Marine Corps, but who's counting.

On May 9, 2003 on the outskirts of Karbala, Iraq, my squad was disposing of Iraqi ordinance (i.e. mortars, rpg's, mines). We got done setting up our shot using C-4, then we popped smoke (pulled fuse ignitior) and got into our Hum-Vee to get to our safe distance. We cut the time fuse to go off in 4 min. The safe distance is 400 meters but we only made it about 200 when the vehicle rolled over one time.

As a result of the accident I had a burst fracture of my C-6 vertebrae in my neck, broke my right wrist, tore my right rotator cuff, and had to have my right index finger amputated. I had to take 4 different helo's to get to Kuwait City where I was put into traction for a day and a half. After that I was sent to Germany for surgery. Almost 3 weeks later I was sent to Balboa Naval Hospital in California. Finally, I was moved to the V.A. Medical Center in La Jolla, California, where I rehabbed for two and a half months.

My name is Cpl. Noah R. Currier USMC. I was in Charlie Company, 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Bn., First Marine Division. I spent two tours overseas, one of which was for operation Enduring Freedom leaving immediately after 9/11 heading for Afghanistan, and the other one landing me in Kuwait to start a war in Iraq on my 21st birthday.

After returning safely from Iraq we had 6 days until we could fly home to see our families. However, on the 4th day I was a passenger in a vehicle with another marine when he fell asleep at the wheel, hitting a tree, that sent us rolling down a 20 ft embankment. The accident left me with a spinal cord injury due to a C5 burst fracture. I now have no feeling or movement below my chest. My arms are strong with minor limitations and my fingers are limp.
